Ruby Survives Disaster!
Firefighters Battle Blaze
Inside Winston Warehouse
What a way to wake up! I hear the grinding of a chain saw, men shouting, truck noise, diesel generators running full force......
.......and I smell smoke! In fact, my whole unit is full of smoke.
I am used to noise in the morning coming in from my windows in the San Fernando Building. People have been working on the inside of a huge gray storage building for weeks now. They start at about 6 am!
When I look out the window, I see a couple of dozen firefighters and several fire trucks with ladders extended. Smoke billows out of the building at 117 E. Winston Street, across the street and down a bit from Crewest Gallery.
Firefighters have entered the warehouse building on several levels by climbing up ladders extended from fire trucks.
Eric the leasing agent claims that someone was sawing and sparks fell down on top of cardboard inside the building.
The sparks caused the fire, he says.
Talk about enterprise! The parking lot is open and is allowing cars to park despite the fire and fire-fighting operation.
Can you see the busy parking attendant? What a trooper!
Things are winding down. The last of the ladders is descending.
Hallejujah! The last of the diesel generators has been turned off. The firefighter is wheeling it away.
Silence really is golden.

Say! I wonder if the taggers will need to come back and touch up their smoke-scarred work.
This truck is finally ready to pull out. The fire has been extinguished and the fighters are ready to head back to the station.
I had better check on Ruby to make sure she has survived this ordeal.
Wait a minute! Ruby, did you really stay in bed and sleep the entire time? You missed the whole crisis. There goes your chance to be a fire dog.
Hmmm.......maybe you have the right idea. I think it's nap time for me too.
There is nothing like a fire right outside the window to really tire a guy--and his girl--out!

ahh you are fast! I was still uploading my photos.. I even got locked out this morning.. oy! so much excitment!
flickr is just overwhelmed!
I was wondering what the racket was about, I think Ruby would make a great Fire Dog, riding around on those trucks would be fun.
Great story Joe,
Once again informative and visually appealing.
Once a teacher always a teacher :)
A couple months ago I took my brother to have "breakfast" at Pete's and we parked in that parking lot off Winston,it is quite interestingly charming seeing how narrow the street is.
Well we did not have breakfast because Pete's is not open for breakfast at least not weekdays, lesson learned.
And yesterday i stopped by at Metropolis Books and got my David Sedaris fix,(Me talk Pretty One Day) I will wait until his new one comes out in paperback.
And for the public record i am a male of hispanic/latino heritage born gay....lol
thats in reference to your other past post about the nameless, faceless voyeurs, so i thought i'd raise my hand and state my presence.
Love and Hate, you really haven't seen Winston Street until you stroll down the street alone between Los Angeles and San Pedro after 9 pm.
If you like David Sedaris, then you should catch his sister Amy in Dolly's video You'd Better Get to Living. It's here: http://citycenterpoz.blogspot.com/2008/02/backwoods-barbie.html
.....and I'm pretty certain you just picked up Latino-loving readers in Little Junction, South Dakota and Beaver Crossing, Nebraska. Now you too can have your own small-town voyeurs!
I love you, Love and Hate!
Oh yes, amy Sedaris is the carnival barker AND the frog!

See the LAFD in action. They arrived in force and prevented a lot of damage.
Great job, Joe. It was like being there. I'm with Ruby--just sleep it away!
Great story and pics, Joe- looks like you had a front-row seat! I'm glad Ruby was able to sleep through the racket, as Isis would have been a nervous wreck...
Thanks, Eric. I ordered a special Super Hero Cape for Ruby from Stella Dottir, but it's still in the box. The girl just hasn't risen to the occasion yet!
Dude, that is not Eureka CA... wtf.
Fool, I used to live in Downtown Los Angeles. I moved to Eureka last August.
